The last few days of September are upon is. Here comes October with all its pumpkins and crunchy leaves and gourds and ghosts and goblins . . . 🎃🍂 🍠👻👺

*Just a friendly reminder – please be mindful of Dane County’s face mask order. If you are spending time indoors with your mentee, be sure that you’re both wearing a mask (We have some if you or your mentee need one). If you’re outdoors, please remain cautious and smart about your interactions with each other.

Challenge for the week:

For September, the challenges will center around the theme of Back to School. This week’s challenge is to get to know your mentee’s schedule. What school events do they have coming up that you could potentially attend? Do they play a musical instrument or sing in the choir? Start letting them know that you’d like to attend a concert! If their sports teams seasons are active, ask when their games are and plan to attend. Is your mentee looking for something to get involved in but they’re not sure what that is? Most schools have an MSCR coordinator that would be able to help you and your mentee find just the right fit!

**By now all of you have gotten teacher contact information for all of your mentee’s teachers. Don’t delay in contacting each teacher to introduce yourself and start making a connection that will strengthen the support network for your mentee!

BONUS CHALLENGE: September is Back-to-School Month and the layered crises facing our nation have made it, perhaps more than ever, imperative that we show up for mentees. With all of the uncertainty surrounding what back-to-school will look like, we need to make sure that students are heard, seen and supported during their learning. Challenge yourself to ask more questions, listen to the details and offer support to both your mentee and their family during this critical time.

TIP OF THE WEEK: You may not pick up on signs of trauma from your mentee right away, or at all. That’s okay! Children show their trauma differently, just as adults do. Be patient with yourself and with your mentee. The goal is to be aware that trauma may be a factor playing into your mentee’s well-being, and it may not be. Keep listening, observing, learning and reaching out to your coach for support in supporting your mentee.
