Challenge for the week:

For December, the challenges will center around the theme of Family. Last week may have been a busy week for both you and your mentee. This means you may not have had the chance to spend time with each other in person or virtually, it’s a new week! This week’s challenge is to check-in with your mentee about the holiday traditions you discussed last week. Perhaps you could send them a message asking how those family recipe cookies they always bake turned out. Or, ask about their time singing carols or playing the games their family loves. Whatever your mentee said their tradition was is your focus when you check-in. This will let your mentee know that you listen and care about what they say!

BONUS CHALLENGE: When we step back and reflect on the meaning of the holiday season, we remember that even more than family and presents and pretty decorations, it’s about hope and peace and light in the darkness. This month, challenge yourself to lead with hope, peace and light as you mentor your mentee. Whatever this looks like to you, do that. Whatever it feels like to you, do that. Whatever hope, peace and light you can share with your mentee, share that.

TIP of the WEEK: Students from poverty often have a diminished sense of control. This may be because limited resources don’t give them the opportunity to make nutritional or entertainment choices. They may also have to share a bed or sleeping space or have to move from one place to another on a whim. Giving students who have experienced these things the perception of choice is extremely valuable. Some ways to do this are, give them choices about which activities you’ll do together, what time you’ll meet, what you’ll talk about, etc.. ~Taken from www.nea.org Teaching Children from Poverty and Trauma.
