Hello Mentors! This is the week our Giving Tuesday fundraising campaign begins and we are SO excited to get to share stories and pictures of your dedication and commitment to Madison area youth! Remember, if you’re not already following us on social media, you’re going to want to start! (Hint, hint – there will be give aways!) Keep an eye out for daily social media posts and make sure you SHARE them on your own social media platforms. The amazing work that you do with mentees is what makes our program successful and this work is what we want people to hear about. Spread the word and let our community know that the work you do building relationships with students is worth every penny of their support. @intentionalmentoringmadison (Instagram, Twitter) and Intentional Mentoring Inc (Facebook)

*Just a friendly reminder – please be mindful of Dane County’s face mask order. If you are spending time indoors with your mentee, be sure that you’re both wearing a mask (We have some if you or your mentee need one). If you’re outdoors, please remain cautious and smart about your interactions with each other.

Don’t forget to follow us and tag us on social media! Look for IntentionalMentoringMadison on FB, Instagram and Twitter!

Challenge for the week:

For November, the challenges will center around the theme of Giving Thanks. This week’s challenge is to shout out your gratitude! One of the “loudest” ways your mentee can do this is through social media. If your mentee has an account, help them post, tweet or snap their gratitude to someone. Talk about who or what they’re grateful for, and why, and then encourage them to be specific in shouting that out. If your mentee doesn’t have an account, think about using yours. Either you can model shouting out or you could even shout out to your mentee!

Another challenge for this week is to talk to your mentee about what they do for Thanksgiving. Get to know their family’s traditions and what Thanksgiving is like in their world. As you’re engaging with your mentee, be sure to talk, listen, share and learn together!

BONUS CHALLENGE: There are numerous studies touting the benefits of practicing gratitude. Therefore, not wanting to ignore the experts and in keeping with the theme for the month, the bonus challenge for November is to give thanks daily. You might even try sending your mentee a text each day telling them what you’re thankful for that day and then asking them to share what they’re thankful for that day. Or, maybe you and your mentee start daily gratitude journals and hold each other accountable to filling them out daily. Find a way to give thanks and be grateful on a daily basis!

TIP of the WEEK: Students living in poverty often live in an environment where the rate of discouraging words is higher than the rate of encouraging words due to the stress their parents/guardians are often under or because of their parents/guardians own personal trauma. For this reason, it’s important to consider how you’re flipping that ratio during the time you’re spending with your mentee.  ~Taken from www.nea.org Teaching Children from Poverty and Trauma.
