Weekly Training Resource
This week’s training resource is the first chapter, about providing emotional support and empathy, of a training called Becoming a Better Mentor..
How does this help me in my mentoring relationship? “Being empathic plays a strong role in a mentor’s ability to offer support that is more likely to be both welcomed and meaningful to their mentees. This is important because social support is an important way that mentoring can promote positive youth outcomes. Better understanding who your mentee is and how they experience the world helps you discern which types of support are likely to be most relevant and to time your offers of support well.”
I also found the end of the chapter very helpful, as it listed some common pitfalls to empathy: assuming similar means the same, thinking you “know best”, blaming the parent(s)/family, and expecting to be “perfectly” empathetic.
Don’t forget to fill out the response form after completing each training.
Challenge for the Week
For August, the challenges will center around the theme of Friendship. This week’s challenge is to do a friendship activity with your mentee. Some possible ideas are to:
- Make friendship bracelets
- Plan to read and discuss the book Wonder
- Watch and discuss a movie that teachers about friendship (Toy Story, My Girl, E.T., The Sandlot, Charlotte’s Web, Finding Nemo, Bridge to Terabithia, Lilo and Stitch)
As always, talk, question, listen, challenge and encourage your mentee while participating in any activity and have fun!
Tip of the Week
Remember that you’re not alone! Your coach and peer mentors are excellent resources! It’s important for you to rely on them and depend on them for support, ideas and feedback.
We love seeing photos of you and your mentee spending time together! Please share them with us via your coach or using the hashtag #intentionalmentoringmadison
