Weekly Training Resource
Challenge for the Week
For July, the challenges will center around the theme of Independence. This week’s challenge is to teach your mentee a new life skill. Depending on your mentee’s age, situation and interests, there are many skills you could teach. For example, mail a letter, how to plan a birthday party, how to change a tire, how to set a table, how to order at a counter, how to make a list and go to the grocery store, how to save money, how to read a map, how to give directions…so many options! As you teach the skill, remember that your mentee may not get it on the first try. Be sure to set aside time to give clear directions and allow them time to practice. Be patient and consistent and praise them for their efforts and successes!
BONUS CHALLENGE: July is Career Readiness Month so let’s learn about how you can help your mentee start preparing now. Step 1: Find out what your mentee wants to be when they grow up. If they have several ideas, learn more about their specific interests in each. If they have one idea, find out what made them hone in on that one. If they don’t have any ideas, help them sort through their interests and then share some careers that match those interests. If you need help, have them fill out this interest survey.
Tip of the Week
“Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances — Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions — Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others . . . ” Boundaries are one of those tricky things we think we understand until we actually stop and think about it. Once we really learn their role in all areas of our lives, we discover the freedom and health they bring. From Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend
