Mentor Development
For May, the challenges will center around the theme of Live Healthy, Be Healthy. This week’s challenge is to talk to your mentee about food. Learn what kinds of foods he/she eats. Do they know what kinds of foods are healthy and which are not? Do they know why some foods are better for them than others? How much say does your mentee have in the kinds of foods that he/she eats? Maybe you could take a trip to the grocery and walk the aisles to get the conversation started. Perhaps you could pick up a few things and then go have a picnic or sit outside and have a healthy snack. Or, go to a bookstore or library, page through some healthy eating cookbooks and find a recipe that you want to make together. Get creative and have fun talking about healthy food!
From May through August you will be discussing Mental Health and Empathy in your coaching meetings. Be sure to check out the articles and videos here.
Activity Ideas
Join the Great Wisconsin Birdathon and look for birds with your mentee!
The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is the largest fundraiser for bird conservation in Wisconsin with over $900,000 raised since its start in 2012. It’s like a walk-a-thon-style fundraiser, but instead of logging miles, participants are logging bird sightings. Last spring, more than 500 people from across the state participated in the event to fund 11 critical bird conservation and education projects. These projects will protect Wisconsin’s threatened and endangered birds by restoring habitat, monitoring bird populations, and inspiring new bird conservationists.
Birdathon teams can participate any day from April 15th to June 15th. Participation is free and no previous experience is necessary. While most teams choose to compete over a 24-hour period, many teams opt to bird over the course of a weekend, a week, or even the entirety of the 2 months. Teams can bird anywhere in Wisconsin– a backyard, local park, or a route to hit all their favorite birding hot spots. Both novice and expert birders can have fun and make a difference in protecting birds—the Birdathon is for everybody!
