Mentor Development

For May, the challenges will center around the theme of Live Healthy, Be Healthy. This week’s challenge is to talk to your mentee about food. Learn what kinds of foods he/she eats. Do they know what kinds of foods are healthy and which are not? Do they know why some foods are better for them than others? How much say does your mentee have in the kinds of foods that he/she eats? Maybe you could take a trip to the grocery and walk the isles to get the conversation started. Perhaps you could pick up a few things and then go have a picnic or sit outside and have a healthy snack. Or, go to a bookstore or library, page through some healthy eating cookbooks and find a recipe that you want to make together. Get creative and have fun talking about healthy food!

Mentor Growth and Development Plan for May-August plan is here.

Connecting with Families

The mission of Intentional Mentoring is to have mentors interact with school, community, and families in order to strengthen the support network for students facing adversity. Getting to know and staying connected with your mentee’s family is vital to building trust and truly understanding your mentee’s perspective. As a mentor, you are in partnership with your mentee’s family, working together for a common goal. Do your best to reach out and make an effort with family members, even when it’s uncomfortable. Remember, they’re probably uncomfortable too! You’re a new adult in their child’s life. The more you connect with the mentee’s family letting them know who you are and getting to know who they are,  the stronger your mentoring relationship will be!
